Tips on How to Detangle Natural Curly Hair

Detangling natural hair can often be seen as a painful chore for many, especially for those with thick, curly/coily hair. However, with the right techniques and products, detangling can be an easy and painless process. Here are 5 sweet saving tips to help you detangle your natural hair with ease:

  1. Use a detangling spray or conditioner- The first commandment when it comes to curly natural hair is to NEVER detangle your hair whilst it’s dry. Using a good detangling spray or conditioner will help to loosen the tangles and make it easier to comb through your hair. Make sure to choose a product that is specifically designed for detangling and is formulated to be gentle on your hair and scalp. A bonus tip is adding a pea sized amount of conditioner into a spray bottle filled with distilled water. Give it a shake and spray — this is a great product saving hack.
  1. Invest in a detangling brush - This is a mandatory essential which prevents pulling and tugging on the hair which leads to hair damage. Sadly, you end up with more hair on an ordinary brush instead of your head! Innovative detangling brushes such as Afro Dtangler have eight free moving prong-like arms which effortlessly glides through the tightest of curled and textured hair.
  1. Divide your hair into sections -This will help you to focus on one section of hair at a time, making it easier to detangle. Divide your hair into 4 to 8 sections, depending on the thickness of your hair, and secure each section with a silk hair tie or clip. Working in sections also ensures that your hair is completely saturated with your choice of hair product.
  1. Prevent unnecessary snagging- Jewellery and chipped nails can easily get caught unto your hair, so be mindful of this before you start.
  1. Take your time- Detangling is not a quick process, especially if you have thick, curly/coily hair. Make sure you take your time and be gentle when working through the tangles. If you come across a particularly stubborn tangle, stop and work through it slowly and carefully.

In conclusion, detangling natural hair can be a challenging task, but with the right techniques and tools, you’ll be looking forward to every detangling session! Hopefully… All im saying is remember to be gentle, take your time, and take advantage of great products such as a detangler which reduces your detangling process by half! It use to take me 10mins with an ordinary brush, but now I get 5 minutes back and so can you!
